Review and Images by Jerred Zegelis
The Sigma 90mm f/2.8 for the full frame cameras is a stellar portrait lens.
I recently tested it on a natural-light portrait shoot, and found the lens to perform well in the field and help me produce results that my client and I were both pleased with.
The 90mm focal length is one very similar to the classic 85mm portrait lens. It creates photographs that compress features in a natural way.

The Sigma 90mm f/2.8 Contemporary was silent and fast to focus. I used continuous focus on the Sony A7C with eye-tracking on. Every shot was focused on the eyes and the camera and lens combination never “hunted” or lost focus during this natural-light portrait session.

The lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8, which is more than enough to blur backgrounds to a pleasing degree. It may not be able to obliterate backgrounds like photographers are able to with something like the 85mm f/1.4 GM lens from Sony, but the f/1.4 lens is more than double the cost of the Sigma.

Sharpness is excellent, as you can see here in this portrait and the 100% crop.

The Sigma 90mm f/2.8 is one of those lenses that doesn’t cost a tremendous amount, but delivers fantastic performance. It’s fast to focus, sharp, and has excellent lens character. It’s definitely worth a look.
